Gibraltar Talks: Fish Creek’s Yacht Races

Join the Gibraltar Historical Association for the final Gibraltar Talks of the season, an evening dedicated to the history of the Fish Creek yacht races. Enjoy photos, conversation, and “captains” discussing the history of the Fish Creek Yacht Club as you listen to the stories of coming around the “ mark”, “losing air”, and imagine “Carla” crossing the finish line with “Ellisar” and “Windbird” not far behind.
Light refreshments will be served. Donations are welcome.

An electronics recycling event open to the public will be held Saturday August 18 from 8 am – noon at Tractor Supply Co. in Sturgeon Bay. A number of items are free to recycle, with some requiring a small fee. Proceeds from the event will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeastern WI.

Visit Noble Square from 10 am – 3 pm, Wednesday, August 22 and watch Heather Richards from ” Thumbs Up Riders” demonstrate the art of horseshoeing. She will show different methods of shoeing, make a handmade shoe from bar stock, have a variety of shoes on display and, if time permits, create a few hooks or picks from a molten metal bar. While visiting the square, learn the difference between a farrier and a blacksmith. Also on hand will be event-specific coloring pages for young and old alike.
Join the Parks & Lands Committee and Fish Creek Watershed team on Thursday, August 16 at 1 pm for an invasive species identification walk-through of Fish Creek. A member of the Door County invasive Species team will be on hand to provide information and answer questions. Meet at Fish Creek Park.
A Special Meeting of Electors will be held Monday, July 9, 2018 at 7 p.m. at the Gibraltar High School Gymnasium to view and vote on the design plan for the new Fish Creek Beach Bath House. The Gibraltar Historical Association will host its second “Gibraltar Talks” of the season on Thursday, July 12 at 7 p.m. at the Old Town Hall (4167 Maple Street). The evening’s presentation on “Bird Migration in the Great Lakes Region” is a free co-sponsored event with Peninsula State Park.
Naturalist Andrew Schinkten will have bird specimens on hand and presenter Kim Greveles will share information about her work with the Wisconsin Stopover Initiative, a partnership focused on enhancing the habitats of birds migrating through the Great Lakes and Mississippi River regions. The community is invited to bring their questions and experiences with bird migration in Door County. View the full press release here.
